Modena and its territory

Theatres and Events

Luciano Pavarotti municipal Theatre, Storchi Theatre and Passioni Theatre offer interesting theatrical productions. Moreover, there are exhibitions at Estense Art Gallery, Photography Foundation, Museum of figurines and the famous contemporary art gallery Emilio Mazzoli.

In September each year the  philosophy festival is held in town and important writers, philosophers, sociologists and politicians are invited to masterly lectures on a specific subject (glory, passion, love, nature, luck, things, community). During the festival many students from all around Italy are also invited to partecipate and the city is full of ambitious exhibitions, concerts, art installations and cultural programs.

The city of Modena offers some unique places to see.
Il Duomo (the cathedral), Ghirlandina Tower and the adjacent Piazza Grande (recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Ducal Palace and the Civic Museum buildings make Modena historical and cultural sights.

The city is well known as a center for mechanical excellence and just outside the outskirts of Modena there are some of the leading car and motorcycle manufacturers such as Maserati, Ferrari (Maranello), Lamborghini (Sant'Agata), Pagani (S .Cesario) and Ducati (Bologna). Most of those companies have a museum aside and furthermore recently has opened MEF (Ferrari automotive museum) dedicated to the life and work of Enzo Ferrari.

Food & Beverage

Not to be overlooked are Modena's culinary excellencies like fine dining at “Osteria Francescana” and meeting the famed italian chef Massimo Bottura or at restaurant Erba del Re (both members of the “Le Soste Guide” circuit). Not to forget historical inns like trattoria “Hermes” and “Aldina”. To buy local products highlight the historic Market Albinelli housed in the  original structure made of wrought iron from '900.

Attractions and surroundings

Strategic location of Modena makes extremely convenient to visit other nearby towns of great touristic interest and to participate important international events. Cersaie and Motor Show fairs in Italy's culinary capital Bologna; Verona the home of opera and its magnificent Arena; Ferrara and its Estense Castle; Mantua with the spirit of the renaissance period and literature festival. Modena is also very close to Reggio Emilia the home of Parmigiano Reggiano.

It is easy to reach Verdi's hometown Parma and ancient roman capital Ravenna (2019 candidate European Cultural Capital) surrounded with nature, rolling hills, breath taking views.

As last but not least the visit of balsamic vinegar production sites is highly recommended for those who stay in the city for a few days. The story, aromas and suggestive scenery will help you understand what is commonly called "black gold", the traditional balsamic vinegar of Modena.
